I served well and played aggressively: Wawrinka

“It was a really good match, especially in the first set. I served well and played aggressively. It was a solid performance,” said Wawrinka.

The Swiss, who has won the last 20 sets here, said: “I like the tournament and the conditions here... it is hot and humid and challenging, physically and mentally. I won playing tough tennis the last two years and I hope to keep it going.”

About his friend Benoit Paire who awaits him in the semifinals, the World No.4 said: “He’s really talented, and it will be a really tough match. We are familiar with each other’s games (they are practice partners), and it’s never easy to play against someone you know so well.”

Asked to pick a one-handed backhand shot he loves to watch, Wawrinka said: “Roger (Federer)’s! He mixes it up so well... the slice, the drop-shot, top-spin...”

On whether he modelled his on that, Wawrinka quickly shot back: “I have never tried to copy his style and do what I am comfortable with.”

Wawrinka said he was ready for the long journey ahead this season. “I had solid pre-season training and feel I can handle any challenge.

“I am looking forward to having a good year,” he said.

About the autorickshaw ride the other day, the Swiss said: “It was fun. It was good. Thanks.”
