After the massive Ahmedabad rally on August 25, which saw the participation of half-a-million people, Mr. Patel has not been able to organise another rally or event to sustain his movement.

On Monday, he and a handful of his supporters went to meet BJP legislator Vallabh Kakadia to ask him to clarify his stand on reservation for the Patel community, but were prevented from meeting him.

“We want every Patel MLA to make his stand clear on our demand for reservation for our community under the OBCs quota in government jobs and educational institutions. When we reached Vallabh Kakadia’s office in Bapunagar, a large number of police and paramilitary forces had already been deployed there to prevent us from meeting the MLA,” Mr. Patel told the media at a press briefing.

Last week, Mr. Patel had announced that his Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) would approach BJP lawmakers belonging to the Patel community seeking their support as the Gujarat government had unequivocally dismissed the quota demand.

Earlier, he tried to organise a reverse Dandi march, but was denied permission by the state administration citing law and order issues. Subsequently, Mr. Patel announced that he would launch a Dandi march next Sunday, but it is unlikely that he would get permission.

Mr. Patel did not even get a venue to hold a meeting of his supporters as some farmhouse and party plot owners withdrew their consent.

Eventually, when he and his supporters tried to hold the meeting at Umiya Campus, a Patel community education institute on the outskirts of Ahmedabad, a police complaint was filed against him for “forcefully entering the campus and creating a ruckus.”
