Why action in 2G scam on DMK alone, asks Advani

PUNE: BJP leader L K Advani, traversing through Maharashtra in the course of his Jan Chetana Yatra against black money and corruption, on Friday asked why has all legal and punitive action in the 2G spectrum scam focused solely on the DMK and not on other names revealed in the course of the investigations.

"I have no sympathy with them (DMK members in jail). Anybody who is corrupt must be dealt with," Advani told reporters before leaving for Mumbai. "But when the government is run by the Congress and all principal departments are with the Congress, how come it's only the DMK people who are suffering? Are they being made a scapegoat? Are there not other names mentioned, which the government has ignored?" he asked.

"The focus of the winter session would be on black money, apart from the question of how the government is bringing relief to the common man, particularly the poor who are hit by inflation," Advani said.

"I have made two demands to the government: bring a comprehensive white paper on black money. And take action against those Indians who have parked their money in Swiss banks and other tax havens," he said.

"Good governance and corruption cannot go together. Corruption and mismanagement of food economy are also interlinked. Corruption is the principal evil behind people suffering inflation. Especially, women whose kitchen budget has gone awry," the BJP leader said.

Advani slammed the UPA government for not being serious in bringing back black money. "India has information about many people who have parked their money in Swiss banks. Why are these names not being declared?" he asked.

Asked whether the Lokpal Bill sought by Team Anna would be passed in the winter session, Advani said, "I hope the bill will be passed. Already, we have got the 'sense of the house', passed in terms of the resolution that Anna Hazare sought during his 12-day fast."

Pune: Senior BJP leader L K Advani has questioned why action in the 2G spectrum scam is focused solely on members of the DMK, an ally in the Congress-led UPA government, and not on the other names being mentioned in the course of investigations.

"I have no sympathy with them (DMK members). Anybody who is corrupt has to be dealt with," Advani told reporters here before leaving for Mumbai on Friday as part of his ongoing nationwide 'Jan Chetana Yatra' to highlight the issues of corruption and black money.

"When the government is run by the Congress principally and all principal departments are with the Congress, how come it is only the DMK people who are suffering? Are they being made a scapegoat? Are there not other names mentioned, which the government has ignored," he asked.

"The focus of the winter session of Parliament would be on the issue of black money, apart from the question of how the government is bringing relief to the common man, particularly the poor who are badly affected by food inflation," Advani said.

"I have made two demands to the government, i.e., bring a comprehensive white paper on the issue of black money - give us all the names you (government) have got. And appropriate action has to be taken against those Indians who have parked their money in Swiss banks and other tax havens," he said.

"Good governance and corruption cannot go together. Corruption and mismanagement of food economy are also interlinked. Corruption is the principal evil behind people suffering inflation. Especially, women whose kitchen budget has gone awry," the BJP leader said.

"The issue of how corruption has been checked and what action has been taken against those who are corrupt is bound to dominate the debates in the winter session," he said, pointing out that the focus on the DMK people alone, instead of others mired in corruption, holds significance in this context.

Advani slammed the UPA government for not being serious in its effort to bring back the black money. "India has got information of many people who have parked their money in Swiss banks. Why the names are not being declared," he asked.

"The revised Indo-Swiss taxation treaty also does not inspire confidence, considering that provisions of the agreement will apply in India only from April 2012. Why so much of leeway? The government has given strong indication to the defaulters to transfer their account to some other banks or financial institutions or plainly withdraw their money from Swiss bank accounts. The very intention of the government is suspect," Advani said.

During the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, the Prime Minister had promised that the government will come out with concrete action within 100 days of coming to power. More than 700 days have passed but the country is still not aware how much progress the government has achieved," he said.

Asked whether the Lokpal Bill sought by Team Anna would be passed in the winter session of Parliament, Advani said, "I hope the bill will be passed. I do not believe why it won't be. Already, we have got the 'sense of the house', passed in terms of the resolution that Anna Hazare sought during his 12-day fast."

Advanispeak Petrol price hike: "International crude price is not going up in the manner in which our prices are going up. I believe the government is compensating for its own mismanagement by allowing oil companies to hike the price many times."

Corruption in Karnataka: "Whatever I had to say I have said. I don't want to add anything on Karnataka."

BJP's candidate for PM: "The PM candidature is not an issue in this yatra. The party will decide the matter as and when elections take place."

Rahul Gandhi and dynastic politics: "I have always maintained that democracy and dynastic succession cannot go together. Is it not shocking that the country's premier political party is pursuing this path?"

Assertive judiciary: "When the executive becomes unmindful of its principal obligations, the juidiciary has to move in to play a key role."
