May 5 will see polls for the Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland devolved assemblies; mayoral contests in London, Liverpool, Salford and Bristol; local council elections in 2,743 seats in 124 councils; and police and crime commissioner elections in England and Wales.
The most watched will be the London mayoral contest and the assembly elections in Scotland and Wales. In London, the Labour Party candidate Sadiq Khan is tipped to win the mayoral seat. In Wales too, Labour is poised to retain its control in the assembly though with a reduced majority. In the case of Scotland, a victory for the Scottish National Party (SNP) appears certain, though here too Labour’s performance will be closely watched. Scotland was Labour’s traditional stronghold but the party was defeated by the SNP in the 2015 general election.
